Today we took a fall hike. I was looking for colorful leaves for a school project tomorrow. I came across this 'lady cigar tree' with leaves bigger than my head. Won't the kids be excited? We saw deer grazing nearby; we watched barge traffic on the Muddy Mississippi River. Oh what a glorious day. In a few minutes I will be serving homemade chicken pot pie (aka chicken bake) as the sun makes its slow crawl down the horizon. I am thankful for my blog friends and for finding my lost book, and being able to spend time outdoors reading Blue Highways, A Journey Into America, by William Least Heat-Moon. I felt like I was traveling the highways and byways, meandering through small town America and meeting the colorful characters. This memoir is chock full of history and interesting facts.
Welcome, Amy! Thanks for following my blog. Matthew will have a blast tomorrow.
Did you do anything fun and interesting this cool, fall weekend?

Is this your first reading of Blue Highways? I have read it a few times, loved it, given it as gifts. His other books are as good but HEAVY reading...he is so wordy you can not relax in the reading: his writing is work to follow.
A PSU game yesterday in great weather but DH ate popcorn when he KNEW he shouldn't and today he is BAD shape...waiting all day to see if this passes or doctor tomorrow! :(
Yes, my first reading. I started it this summer and misplaced it, and found it today in a pile of books.
Poor hubby. I have the same problem. Nuts usually do me in. Usually if I lie still or in a warm bath for a while and try to relax, it will subside. Called doc and she asked if I needed an antibiotic. I said I'd wait and see if it let up. It did. Hope he feels better.
Hi Linda...So glad you had a nice day. It was awesome here, too. Clear, golden, and cool. Fabulous. Take care. Susan
Everyone including myself - is so happy and alive with this kind of weather - aren't we? There is somthing that makes one come alive . . .

Hi Linda! Where have I heard of that book before? I remember someone telling me about it, or blogging about it....Was it Dianna? I seem to think it was! Glad you had a great weekend. I did, too! I had a very busy week and thoroughly enjoyed everything....except for Tiger getting me up in the middle of the night, last night...but I forgave her, as always! :)
Yes we did. On Friday we drove around this golf course that was built in the 1920s and Al Capone and his friends would fly down to it. It has not been used in two years and it was fun to imagine its history.
Hi! Nice to meet you! It was very cold in New England this weekend and rain all week> :(

Hi Deborah,
WELCOME! I have dear friends in Wakefield, MA. Where do you live and do you have a blog? Thanks for following mine. Stop by frequently.
Susan,Sandie, Becky, Terri,
Isn't this just the best time of the year?
WOW! Terri, that sounds like a history article, or for sure an inclusion in a story.
Sounds like you had a great weekend.
Same here. This weekend was a blur of soccer, football, and a homecoming dance. Oh, and a trip to the library while waiting for my granddaughter to get her hair done. But all were fun!
Walt brought home another huge sack of pears from the country--and I'm searching for recipes.

Hi Donna,
Wow, you sure did have a busy weekend. Did you ever make a pear coffeecake with streussel topping? Used to get those at a bakery, also grape cakes made with those plump purple grapes.
Pat,
You are a gadabout, always doing something fun; even your pets get in on the action!
