What a potato head!

When Welsh farmer Ifor Edwards dropped his keys he called in a metal-detecting agency. They found the keys and also 14 medieval coins from the 14th and 15th centuries, according to a story published Monday in the Shropshire Star.

Can you even imagine? Well, I can. My son was digging in our back yard when he was a little boy and he found a partially corroded coin with an 1800's date. Someone advised us to place the coin into a slit, raw potato. We did and he put it in the fridge. Of course the potato shriveled and turned black around the area that was cut.

My mom was very helpful and often folded laundry or hand washed my dishes when she came for a visit. Can you imagine my son and his dad when they went to check out the coin in the potato and both were gone?

Mom thought she was tossing food-gone-bad. The trash truck was long gone and by then, so was Mom.
Do you want to know a secret? I am old enough to remember the first Mr. Potato Head game. The plastic pieces were inserted into a REAL potato. Eww, can you imagine storing that?

If you have a cleaner upper around you should always put notes on things you don't want thrown away, I have learnt from experience too.

No! I didn't see where that was going.

It won't work for Moms, but if you want to keep a man from getting into something you're saving in the fridge...wrap it in foil and put it near the back. A friend of mine saved a chocolate Easter bunny until well past September that way. Though how she had such willpower is beyond me.

Or, you can just put whatever you want hidden (from males) in the closet with cleaning supplies. No man or boy ever ventures into that area...

I have to admit - I have been known to be a cleaner upper - stay away from me.

Oh yes, I remember the "real" Mr. Potato Head, too! As I recall, he'd get rather smelly after a while.

Oh, the horrors of that lost coin! Wish you knew more about it before it went traveling. I wonder where it is right now and if it will ever be found again?

Oh my gosh, Linda.

Your Mummy must have felt SO BADLY when she discovered what she threw out. Poor dear.

If I put things in the back of the refrigerator, they are safe. No one ventures back there but me! ha! Susan

The Boy would have swallowed that coin whole - he regularly performs fridge recon raids in the middle of the night, gobbling up whatever suits his fancy.

I used to be able to hide tasty morsels in the veggie bin, but he now checks there, too.

Potatoes have so many uses -- dropped into soups/stews they absorb salt (a handy trick if the cook was heavy-handed) and my aunt swore by the old wives' tale that to dissolve a wart one needed only to slice a potato, rub it on the wart, and then bury the potato in the yard; the wart would fall of within a week. I never personally put this to the test, but Auntie swore by it.
