http://www.literal-latte.com/contests/ This is a link to several contests, which means there is a fee, but there are also prizes. It's up to you. I usually do not pay reading fees.
I did spend $15 to enter the Erma Bombeck contest and also to enter Missouri Writer's Guild Conference contests. I know my chances are as good as the next persons and I am willing to take my chances.
I just saw a call out for "car-free" poetry. Attach a PDF file of your poem and email to Kelly.Nelson@asu.edu with a short bio. Write Poetry submission in subject line. Google "Car free poetry" to read one of Ted Kooser's entries.
Not a poet? Neither am I, although I write poetry. I am not a trained poet. I am not educated in how to write poems. I just write from my heart and try to connect with the reader.
If the editor happens to have high academia expectations, my poem will be ruled out. But if it is a person looking for a poetic experience with word play and meaning, then mine might be considered. Either way, I am willing to take the chance.
It is a new year, folks, and you should try something new and different, stretch your writing muscle.
What are you working on? I personally am working on trying to stay warm. It is -7 degrees.
Those of you who like winter, help me see your point of view.

I will pass this on to some writer friends. I hope you all get a break weather wise, and soon!
We are so darn cold too! I have just turned on oven in name for baking something for warmth. BAD idea but you know....
I have not gotten back to my big writing project for couple of days, but I did write and submit to TRUE WEST yesterday. Not that was different for me, and like you, what can they say but NO. I won't hear them snicker in their Arizona office...because I will frozen to death here!
Thank you for sharing the call for poetry. I might give that one a try.
I'm so tired of the winter and of being cold. Spring can't come soon enough for me.
Yes, you're right of course. The playing field is nice and level...I guess.
H'mmm writing? What's that?

It's hard to teach me new tricks, but I might look into it.
Yes, I read Ted Kooser's entry, but what about Denver Butson's? Talk about P-O-E-T-R-Y!? Whew. I could never write like that, and after reading his, I thought about not bothering, but...what the heck, right? Good luck on all your submissions.
I'm trying something new and different starting next month and it has nothing to do with writing. I'm trying Tai Chi in one more attempt to relieve pain and regain some flexibility.
You're right - you have to be in it to win it:-) I'm entering some competitions this year. Strange how the mind goes blank (or blanker) when faced with contest . . .
I submitted a couple of the things the first week of the month but have spent the rest of my writing time on my manuscript. Perhaps my WIP will benefit from a break, especially if I follow your advice and "stretch my writing muscles." Sounds like a plan!
