This old house...

Crazy unpredictable weather! Sunday it was 60 degrees and within hours it was 6 degrees. Winds were whipping at 50mph. But, while it was balmy, we got outdoors. We drove across the Mississippi River to Columbia and Waterloo, Illinois, both historic little towns.

I like taking pictures of old houses. This Victorian appealed to me, but I couldn't get a full shot so you can't see the cute little attic dormer windows.

I imagine dozens of scenarios when I see large old homes like this. Did a farmer and is wife raise a dozen kids out here in the flat lands?

And what about this beauty with a wrap around porch? Writer friends, you can use visuals like these as prompts to help create scenes in your prose or poetry.

Which is your favorite? Why?

I love big old lovely homes like this too. What ghosts they must house!

I'll take house #1, Linda. It looks Victorian to me and, if I were to choose another age in which to live, that would be it.

I love Victorian decor and customs.

Yes, I love that house. Susan

Oh I love old homes like this! I like the second one best because it looks like it is made of brick. If I could live in one I would but my pratical husband says they cost too much to heat!

Hi Linda. Glad you took the opportunity to get out and about fora while. I love old houses like that and, yes, isn't it fun to imagine the people living in them over the years. We're having very wet weather over here with lots of flood warnings :(

My dad was a builder so I love custom built homes. That being said, I'll take the brick because it's sturdier (just ask the three little pigs) but I would have my contractor put the wrap around porch that is on the third house. Also ghosts don't come with new homes. I'm just saying. . .

# 3 for me, because of the wrap-around porch.

Your post reminded me of a photo I insisted my husband pull over (we were on a trip) and take of an abandoned house almost completely covered with kudzu. I love houses too, because they have so many stories (real and otherwise) within their walls. I like the first photo best because of the trim and the white iron fence.

The wrap around porch. Not the biggest, but the best.

I drive five minutes extra each morning to go down a street with old homes built during Missouri's lead-mining heyday. Just today I was commenting on how I'd like to see the rooms inside, especially the ones with the dormer windows, or turrets, or odd-shaped attic additions.

The one that got my imagination going was this afternoon, when I saw an oval window, way up high, covered with plywood. To keep something from looking in...or to keep something from looking out?

What fun you had on a nice day! I would take the third one...those double screen doors would open out and look like two arms welcoming you home!

I love that wraparound porch on the last one. Neat pictures!

I love old homes like these and I especially love wrap around porches.
Here's a tip, for taking photos of tall houses, turn your camera to vertical, then you can probably get the whole house, attic windows and all.

I also like the wraparound porch. A glass of iced tea, a nice rocker, a side table for some books, and I'd happily rock my old age away (partly to avoid going inside to clean such a big house!).

I love old houses, too. It is amazing that back in those days they built such fine houses, most of my ancestors lived in little ol' houses. I think I like the first one best.
