Great Discoveries

Don't you just love finding things? I discover the best treasures in thrift shops, or sitting at the curb, in books, on line, everywhere! You have to be on the lookout.

I just found a writer's goldmine and want to share it with you. woodenhorsepub.com(Wooden Horse Publishing)is a website that posts all of the newly launched magazines. Check it out and pitch a query to a publication that piques your interest.

My find this week is THE A.D.D. Book by William Sears, M.D. and Lynda Thompson, Ph.D. Since I am an early childhood teacher, this book contains all sorts of relevant information. It's a treasure to me because it is an uncorrected advance proof with editorial notations from Little, Brown and Company, Publishers; 34 Beacon Street; Boston, Massachusetts. I assume that this book was probably in the hands of one of the coauthors or at least the editor whose adhesive label with her name and phone number appears on the top left hand corner.

The thrift store charges a percentage according to the sticker price of the books. Because this book was a galley proof, and there was no official sticker price other than the suggested retail price TYPED on the cover ($37.95) I bought this book for 65cents.

Do tell me about one of your unexpected finds or treasured discoveries; it doesn't have to be literary.

Hi Linda,
Thanks. This is great. For some reason I haven't been able to post comments on your blog. Hope this works. I tied to post twice about your lovely First Dance poem, but no luck.

Hi Linda...Oh yes, I love to find treats in thrift shops, too. This morning, however, I was in a general store in a quaint New England town. There was a bargain corner and there, in a green tutu and green slippers with a green rose in her "hair" was a bunny, waiting for Easter. Best part, on the bottom was the price...FIFTY CENTS. I couldn't believe my stroke of good luck. She will be adorable at Easter time. Congrats on your book find. Sincerely, Susan

Thanks especially for the tip on that website. And I think only a damaged mind can't appreciate thrift and second-hand book stores!

I'll check out the website you mentioned - thanks for the "head's up". I discovered the wonderful book "The Intelligencer" by new author Leslie Silbert at the library. I posted a blog about it last year, actually. I was desperate for new reading material, and finding her book on the library shelf (where it had been misplaced) was pure serendipity. It is so wonderful when that happens!
