You learn something new everyday

I saw the cutest thing going to work and also coming home. A dad was walking down the street with his two year old little boy. The toddler was holding a bumbershoot the size that a golfer might use or that would accomodate six people. The dad was holding it by the tip-top point. The little guy was holding it by the handle, so proud of carrying that big thing all by himself. The poor dad had a child-size bumbershoot over himself.

Coming home I saw a mom with two babies in a two seater stroller. She also had one of those gigantic bumbershoots. She maneuvered around in an attempt to protect herself and the small ones, but finally gave up, plopped that bubble top between the two seater stroller and went on her merry way getting doused.

According to Wikkipedia: a bumbershoot (American slang), or brolly (UK slang), is a canopy designed to protect against rain or sunlight. In other words, an umbrella.

The weather people were wrong again. Prediction: rain moving out by noon and cool air moving in. It has been raining all day and it's still stuffy, muggy and miserable.

It's gray and chilly here. May need to drag out a jacket if we go out later. Have a great weekend!

There are those parents, like the ones you saw, who are great bumbershoots in the way they parent and love their children.

I would have adored seeing them!

It took me a minute to catch on to. I wonder where the word bumbershoot came from. I'll have to go look it up. Hope tomorrow is a sunnier day.

Bumbershoot. That's not a popular slang term, or is it an old one?

Our rain has stopped and weather is cooler now...for a couple of days maybe. Surely it is coming your way!!!

Bumbershoot - what a lovely name. Thank you for the definition - it saved me looking it up:-)

I give up on umbrellas too. Trying to keep it from blowing inside out in the wind, my wrists and shoulders getting sore from holding the position...I just fold the thing up and get wet. I don't mind too much, I can dry off when I get home.
I have never heard the word bumbershoot before.

:) The dad & his little tike sound adorable. And now today I've learned a new term for my trusted friend. Well really I have three...one in the car, one by my door, and one floating around somewhere...just in case I can't find the other two ;)

I'm the kind of person who looks up random words in online dictionaries. I knew the definition of bumbershoot already. I'm pretty sure it's British in origin - as I've only come across the word in books by British authors.

What a great word! It goes with yesterday morning's weather so well, too. Today it would be a parasol, huh?

Hi Linda....I didn't know what that word was. Thanks for the explanation. Wish you could have gotten photos! That would have been so cute. Susan p.s. Love all your visits!

I can just see that Dad and Mom making the sacrifice to keep their little ones dry. We had a lot of rain here earlier today too, but I believe it has finally stopped.
