I'll tell you mine if you tell me yours

Shhhh, I want to know YOUR secret and I will tell you mine, but you must not laugh and point to me and talk to others (while in my presence) about my little quirk.

We all have quirks AND talents. If you ask my granddaughter's husband, he will tell you my greatest feat (since he's known me) is sneaking 16 ounce sodas out of a riverfront casino for him and his then girlfriend, my first granchild. They were in their late teens. The riverboat Admiral, used to cruise the Mississippi River in its hey day, but when it fell into disrepair, it became a stationary casino moored on the St. Louis Riverfront.

Hubby drove us down on the wharf, under the Arch, and we wanted to dart into the casino for a minute. The kids had fun discovering the Mighty Mississippi and chasing hundreds of pigeons. He was from a rural area and that many pigeons in one place was a thrill. I told them we'd be out in fifteen minutes (we were) and I would bring them a soda (I did.)

They were sitting on a bench, and he was thirsty from all that pigeon chasing. He looked at me expectantly and then with disapointment when he didn't see two bottles in my hands. I said, "Walk up on the sidewalk off the casino property and I'll give you your drinks."

It was illegal to take any beverage (even water) from the casino back then. But that didn't stop me.

As their shoes left the cobblestones and met the sidewalk, I slid my hand into my purse and pulled out a filled-to-the-brim cup of soda without a lid. And then another one. My grandson-in-law's eyes widened and he asked, "How did you do that?"

"Very carefully," I said with a smile.
He looked in my purse expecting it to be saturated. It was dry. Now, you know my talent, which he still talks about.

Here's my travel quirk:
Ever since I saw on Sixty Minutes that hotel linens, especially wash cloths and towels can contain E-coli bacteria even after washing in scalding water, I refuse to use their wash cloths. I buy a package of cheap ones from Wal-Mart and toss them...into the trash if they are still wet when we pack to leave, or if they are dry, into the dirty laundry. Am I the only one?

Would you share your travel quirks/secrets with me? I may include them (with your permission) in an article.

Hi Linda. Love that story about the soda's! I also love that new photo of you on your sideline. I presume that was taken on your latest cruise a while ago. I'm afraid I must be really boring, because I haven't got any quirks to report. Sorry!!

I refuse to drink out of hotel room glasses. Perhaps I saw the same 60 Minutes segment, because I remember a show with a hotel housekeeper explaining why you never see fresh glasses on the maid carts when rooms are being cleaned. They swirl some water in the used glasses, and WIPE THEM OFF WITH BATHROOM TOWELS! Sometimes, they aren't even CLEAN bathroom towels. So you could be swilling from a glass shined with a stranger's butt towel.

I take Solo cups, or buy a 20 oz. bottle of soda and refill that when the soda is gone. No butt beverages for me.

I enjoyed your stories. That must have been quite a feat to get those drinks out without spilling them. The only traveling quirk I can think of is that I always check to see where the closest stairs and exit are when I'm in a hotel in case there is a fire. I'm not sure why I always do that, but I do.

My gosh, I have heard of questionable cleaning in motels but never these exact stories! Ah, maybe I better rethink my camping complaints. At least I have my own towels, cups and no butt bevs for me either!

After watching the show "Dirty Jobs" I never use the top bedspread--I just wad it up and toss it on the floor every evening. Apparently, it's only washed once or twice a year. Yuck.

Now I will have to do the same thing with the wash cloths. AND bypass the glasses. Yikes. Is nothing safe?

I didn't know about any of these things, having travelled the world a couple of times I just relax and go with the flow, I had a few bad experiences but not many.

Eww to the hotel stories! Now, I'll have to do more than carry Lysol with me.

Wow, Linda, you must have a pretty steady hand to have gotten those sodas out without spilling them.

Travel quirks? Hmmmmm. I always pull down the covers and check the white sheets for little black spots.....bed bugs. Yuk!

I always check the tubby, too, because I don't want to find any hairs from other people.

I like to put the bathroom rug "towel" down because I don't like stepping on the bare floor.

Also, I always use slippers or sandals at night, as I don't know how many bare feet walked on that rug!

Yeah, I'd say I have quite a few quirks. ha hahahah Susan

Impressive that you are a pop-pincher! A soda-stasher! A talented cup-carter! I don't travel, but I did recently see an anti-bed bug bag that looked like a pretty good idea to me. Bleah!

Wow, you're like a magician with the soda carting. What size is that purse of yours? Now how can towels have nasty stuff left in them after being washed in hot water? Seems all towels would have that, even in your own home.
